Here we have a very cool 1951 Gibson LG-2 that has undergone extensive, high-quality restoration while retaining its outstanding tone and playability.
The guitar is in good overall condition and has recently received a professional neck reset, bringing the neck geometry back to factory specifications. It plays effortlessly and sounds exactly as a vintage LG-2 should. It has also received a complete refret, along with a new bone nut and bone saddle.
A correctly sized maple bridge plate has been accurately reproduced and installed. The original bridge remains with the guitar.
When I acquired the instrument, all of the original top and back braces had come loose. Every original brace has been carefully cleaned, re-glued, and secured. The guitar also had numerous significant back cracks that required extensive repair. Due to the severity of the damage, a new matching mahogany pho back panel was fabricated to the correct thickness and dimensions, then accurately fitted and reinstalled onto the original rim. All original back braces were retained, re-radiused, cleaned, and reinstalled.
The original center back strip reinforcement had deteriorated beyond repair, so a faithful maple replacement was made and installed.
The guitar retains its original bridge, all original interior bracing, and the original serial number on the head block.
At some point in its life, the tuners were replaced. It is now fitted with period-correct replacement tuners that are appropriate for the instrument.
The soundhole appears to have been enlarged sometime in the guitar's past. I'm not sure why this modification was made, but it has become part of the instrument's history and vintage character.
Cosmetically, the guitar shows honest vintage wear, including numerous nicks, chips, dents, dings, scratches, and other superficial blemishes consistent with a well-played 1951 instrument. Please review the photos carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
The guitar includes a quality aftermarket case.
Overall, this is a wonderful player's-grade 1951 Gibson LG-2 with extensive structural restoration that has been completed correctly. It is stable, plays beautifully, and delivers the warm, responsive tone these vintage Gibsons are known for.
